Louis Leret recommends: 17 Cosplays Steamier Than Their Characters

Image
Cosplay is one of the most common sights of the convention scene. Nearly every single con you choose to go to will be littered with fellow fans embodying their favorite characters with meticulously handmade clothing, make-up and props. It’s only fitting that some exceptionally talented individuals have dedicated their lives to accurately portraying attractive fictional entities with great success. But then there’s also the odd flipside of the popular trade. Sometimes cosplayers seek out unloved and unattractive characters, which they then decide to give an unexpected makeover. Sometimes things are as simple as gender-bending a familiar character. Other times are far more extreme, like giving a character a head-to-toe makeover and redesign while retaining the original essence, leaving them identifiable even after the upgrade. In ... Louis Leret recommends: 15 Things You Didn’t Know About The Disastrous Judge Dredd

Image
If you’re making a list of the worst comic book-based movies of all time,  Judge Dredd  probably isn’t in the #1 slot, but it’s almost certainly very close to the top. Upon its release in June of 1995, the movie received critical reviews that could charitably be described as poor. Reaction from longtime Dredd fans wasn’t any better. The film even churned up a bit of controversy, due to the fact that the titular character removes his helmet during the course of the story — something he’d almost never do on the page. It was widely believed that the studio, the Disney-owned Hollywood Pictures, didn’t want to pay star Sylvester Stallone millions of dollars ... Louis Leret recommends: 15 Most Offensive Star Wars Characters Who Couldn’t Be In The Movies Today

Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi is now out in theaters and is set to become one of (if not the most) highest grossing films of all time. This should come as no surprise; every single Star Wars movie has come close to shattering the records set by the previous installments in the series upon release. The story, the action, the drama, and the truly immersive world George Lucas has created all feed into our love for Star Wars . But perhaps above all, it’s our love of the great characters that keeps us coming back to the ... Louis Leret recommends: Black Mirror Season 4 Is At Its Best Finding Hope In Otherwise Bleak Scenarios

Image
Since its premiere, and before it was a twinkle in Netflix’s eye, Black Mirror made a name for itself partly through its Twilight Zone -like anthology format of single-serving episodes that delivered somewhat outlandish but still totally plausible tales of technology gone wrong. And in doing so, the series really became known for its bleak tenor and scenarios that painted a rather dismal, inorganic, social media-driven, corporation-ruled future for humankind. Sure, there were moments where things looked up for a bit, but Black Mirror was, if nothing else, utterly competent in delivering twists that snatched defeat ... Louis Leret recommends: Weekend Box Office Wrap-up: December 31, 2017

Image
It was a close race for the top spot at the box office, but the charts saw little change as we bring in 2018. Pulling off the three-peat is  Star Wars: The Last Jedi , which brought in $52.4 million in its third weekend to raise its domestic total to $517.1 million. Initially (especially after the 69 percent second weekend drop), there was some concern  Episode VIII would underwhelm (relatively speaking) commercially, but those concerns are hardly warranted.  The Last Jedi has quickly become the highest-grossing film of 2017 in the United States and the latest member of the $1 billion club. This marks the third consecutive time a  Star Wars movie has crossed ... Louis Leret recommends: Marvel Should Invest in a Marvel MAX Movie Imprint

Image
The news that Disney was planning to buy 20th Century Fox may have come out of nowhere, but discussions about the implications quickly began amongst fans and critics. One major topic was the idea that, under Disney’s purview, singular and R-Rated films like  Deadpool and  Logan would never get made. We cautioned that Disney wouldn’t ruin Deadpool given their track record of non-family content ( The Punisher being a fitting recent example) and the character’s continued reign in Marvel Comics. Sure enough, the recent finalization of the deal between Disney and Fox brought with it word from Bob Iger ... Louis Leret recommends: 16 Movies That Were Canceled Mid-Filming

Image
As even the most casual cinema buff already knows, film productions get canceled all the time. A reminder of the colossal effort required to actually make a movie, these aborted projects will typically be announced by their respective studios, a script will be developed and cast and crew hired – only to be scuttled soon after. There are plenty of reasons why this occurs – the most common causes are creative disagreements between studio executives and the filmmakers, or financial concerns – but regardless, these reasons wind up being sufficient to ensure the plug is pulled. Like we said, happens all the time – but what doesn’t happen that often is that a film actually commences ... Louis Leret recommends: Star Trek: 16 Most Despicable Things Starfleet Has Done

Image
In Star Trek , Gene Roddenberry’s idealistic vision of the future, the United Federation of Planets is born. Money is forgotten, technology is advanced, and the human race lives in near-harmony with their alien neighbors, too busy exploring the wonder of far-flung reaches of the galaxy with Starfleet to engage in discrimination or warfare. Except every TV show needs drama. So, as the franchise progressd Roddenberry’s perfect future became less and less idyllic. The Federation is clearly a military organization; they do not just participate in wars, they initiate them. Starfleet has a secret intelligence organization, which engages in clandestine, dubious tactics; their Captains repeatedly break their own Prime Directive, interfering with both space ... Supergirl actor Jeremy Jordan wants to play a superhero someday. Jordan currently plays Winn Schott, Kara Danvers’ friend and co-worker at the DEO, on Supergirl . Winn is often an integral part of saving the day. He is incredibly smart and often responsible for coming up with the solution that Supergirl needs to defuse any situation. Yet for all Winn does, he is still considered more of a sidekick than a hero – even though he will be rising into more of a leadership role soon. It’s not hyperbole to say that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has changed the way that movie franchises are developed. There is more to it than simply throwing a few recognizable characters together, as the creators of the DC Cinematic Universe and the Dark Universe learned the hard way. The movie industry might currently be obsessed with crossing different franchises over, but the TV industry has been doing it for years. Last week, Doctor Who said goodbye to Peter Capaldi in a memorable Christmas Special , and now the series is saying goodbye to the Twelfth Doctor’s TARDIS with a strangely melancholy time-lapse video. Endings are hard, even when your character is Doctor Who and can regenerate in perpetuity to keep the franchise wheels spinning indefinitely, but ‘Twice Upon a Time’ managed to send Capaldi’s guitar-playing Doctor off with some finesse, while also introducing Jodie Whittaker’s highly anticipated take on the character, all while leaving the audience with one heck of a cliffhanger. Louis Leret recommends: Star Wars 8’s Deleted Scenes Could Have Fixed Controversial Plotlines

Star Wars: The Last Jedi has a lot of deleted scenes, and rather than just being needless filler, some of them could have directly addressed the most common criticisms of the film. Episode VIII may have been met by overwhelming positivity from critics, but it’s been much more divisive in the fanbase , with a seemingly neverending string of plot illogicies and character betrayals being cited. Much of this centers on the very concept of Rian Johnson’s film, but some of them may be caused – or, rather, exacerbated – by certain scenes that were cut. 2017 has been a special year for video games. It witnessed the return of such important series as The Legend of Zelda , saw factory line franchises like Call of Duty return to their roots, and even bore witness to the arrival of some impressive new properties. Of course, the year was not without its troubles. One look at the most anticipated games of 2017  paints a picture of delayed releases and disappointing launches for some of the most-wanted games, while troublesome and predatory business practices such as the ongoing gaming loot box problem  has hampered the success of titles such as Star Wars: Battlefront II . Since the ’90s, Sailor Moon has inspired young women to be whoever they want to be. Serena is not your typically graceful princess-warrior; she loves to eat sweets, play video games, and is constantly looking for romance. While Sailor Moon accomplishes this goal most of the time, sometimes they miss the mark. There were instances where Sailor Moon could have been better supported, where the message gets muddled, or where the show becomes down-right inappropriate. While there have been several instances of the English dubbed version being more kid friendly, some moments were too integral to the story to be removed completely. A new video from Netflix explores the alternate history of the world of their new release,  Bright . The fantasy cop thriller starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton is a certified smash for the streaming service, racking up 11 million viewers in its first three days alone. Its success comes in the face of some  truly awful reviews ; the critical consensus on the film is pretty terrible. One of the chief criticisms leveled at  Bright  is its largely unexplained (but prominently featured) magical mythology. The world as we see it in the film looks very similar to the one we live in, just with orcs, elves, and magic thrown into the mix. Those elements seem to have had surprisingly little impact on the world itself, however. Hollywood can be an incredibly vindictive place. Stories of the entertainment business chewing up and spitting out bright eyed young talents are as old as the industry itself. The tales of young actors who were brought low by their own egos or addictions could fill libraries. But there’s another, more insidious form of show business burnout that tends to be less mythologized. With surprising regularity, young stars have their careers intentionally sabotaged for nefarious reasons. Often the motivations are personal; a young actress who rebuffed the romantic advances of a powerful producer can find herself suddenly struggling to land roles. Sometimes the motivations have been political, like during the Red Scare of the 1950s that saw a stunningly large ... A brand new promo for the newest season was released by the streaming service that pays homage to the unsettlingly thin line that distinguishes the real world from the bleak, tech-obsessed nightmare that is Black Mirror .
