Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: Kevin Hart Has the ‘Extreme Job’ of Remaking Korean Box Office Cop Comedy Hit

Image
Kevin Hart is cooking up the next Hollywood remake of a hit Korean film. In March,  Extreme Job  became the highest grossing film of all time in South Korea, taking in 14 times greater than the film’s budget with a $127 million haul. Now, the South Korean box office smash is coming to the States with a remake. The Wrap broke the news that Kevin Hart is producing and looking to star in the English-language remake of  Extreme Job , an action-comedy directed by  Byung-heon Lee which follows a group of narcotics detectives who go undercover in a fried chicken joint to stake out a neighboring organized crime gang. But business unexpectedly takes off, and the cops are forced to juggle running a thriving chicken restaurant with catching criminals.  Tracy Oliver ( Girls Trip, Little ) is on board to adapt the screenplay, while Hart is reportedly eyeing a starring role. The South Korean film, which stars Ryu Seung-ryong, Lee Hanee, Jin Seon-kyu, Le...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: ‘Apocalypse Now: Final Cut’ Release Date Revealed for Both Theaters and 4K Blu-ray

Image
Francis Ford Coppola ‘s  Apocalypse Now has been released (and unreleased) in various forms. But the filmmaker recently put together what he considers to be the final cut, and screened it at the Tribeca Film Festival. If you were unable to attend Tribeca, and still want to witness what Coppola has in store, you’re in luck: an  Apocalypse Now: Final Cut release date has been set for both theaters and Blu-ray the summer. “When asked which version I personally wanted to be shown, I often felt that the original 1979 was too abruptly shortened, and Redux was too long, and settled on what I now felt was the perfect version, which is what we’re showing at Tribeca later this month, called Apocalypse Now Final Cut .” So said director Francis Ford Coppola when news of the  Final Cut first broke. The film screened at Tribeca this week, and now, a wider release is on the way. First,  Apocalypse Now: The Final Cut will hit theaters on August 15. Then, on August 27, t...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: ‘Suicide Squad’ Sequel Cast Adds Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher

Image
The   Suicide Squad sequel cast continues to assemble, and the latest addition is a fresh face indeed. Daniela Melchior , an actress who has primarily worked in Portuguese film and television projects. Melchior would play Ratcatcher, a character who can control rats (didn’t see that coming, did you?). Melchoir joins Idris Elba , Margot Robbie , John Cena , and more in the James Gunn -directed sequel. Variety broke the news about Daniela Melchoir joining the cast of  The Suicide Squad , the sequel to the downright terrible  Suicide Squad . In the comics, Melchoir’s character Ratcatcher was male, but Gunn has decided to change the character to female. She’ll have some sort connection to whomever Idris Elba is playing. Elba was originally cast to take over the part of Deadshot from Will Smith, but it was then decided Elba would play another role – in case Smith ever wants to return as Deadshot for future films. In the comics, Ratcatcher is a former exterminator wh...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: ‘Sing Street’ is Becoming a Stage Musical From the Team Behind ‘Once’

Image
Sing Street may be the great underrated film of this decade. The scrappy little musical dramedy from Once director  John Carney  flew under the radar when it was released in 2016, despite its all-time great ’80s-inspired soundtrack and sweet coming-of-age story. But it could soon live on in more than just the hearts of the dozens of cinephiles who champion it , and find a new life as a stage musical. A  Sing Street musical is coming to Off Broadway’s New York Theatre Workshop, developed by the team behind the Tony-winning stage adaptation of  Once . Carney is reuniting with Edna Walsh , who wrote the book for the stage adaptation of  Once , to develop the stage musical version of his film  Sing Street , according to The New York Times . The Sing Street musical will make its world premiere during the 2019/20 season at Off Broadway’s New York Theatre Workshop, which is one of the venues where  Once ran before it made its lauded ...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: ‘Ophelia’ Trailer: Daisy Ridley Shows a New Side to Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’

Image
There’s no greater tragedy in the classic Shakespeare plays than the frequent under-serving of their secondary female characters. But  Ophelia seeks to remedy that in its reimagining of  Hamlet , which tells the tragedy of the Danish prince through the eyes of his doomed lover. Watch the  Ophelia trailer below. Ophelia Trailer Daisy Ridley trades  Star Wars for Shakespeare as the titular noblewoman of Denmark who falls in love with Prince Hamlet. But rather than going through the thankless supporting role of being stuck between her father Polonius and Hamlet before her tragic offscreen death, Ophelia gets to take center stage in the upcoming IFC film. Ridley gives a fragile performance as Ophelia in the film directed by Australian filmmaker Claire McCarthy , who gives a painterly quality to  Ophelia  reminiscent of the famous paintings by John Everett Millais and John William Waterhouse. Millais and Waterhouse’s paintings were what popul...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: ‘Game of Thrones’ Cinematographer Defends the Dark Lighting Choices of “The Long Night”

Image
Even if you don’t watch Game of Thrones , you may have heard about “The Long Night,” the biggest battle in the history of the HBO series…and one that many viewers said they couldn’t see. Literally. Rather than stage a traditional war scene, director Miguel Sapochnik chose to cloak much of the conflict in darkness and shadow, pushing many consumer-grade televisions to the brink and leading to ongoing online arguments about whether or not this choice heightens the tension or diminishes it. And now, we have something of a response from someone involved in making the episode. Cinematographer Fabian Wagner has chimed about the whole thing and he’s sticking to his guns about the creative choices the crew made. Speaking with TMZ , Wagner was fairly blunt about why “The Long Night” was so dark. [ Game of Thrones ] has always been a very dark and a very cinematic show,” he said, placing the blame on bright living rooms, improperly calibrated televisions, and streaming services that were s...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: ‘The Society’ Trailer: Netflix Gives Us an Attractive Teen Take on ‘Lord of the Flies’

Image
This new Netflix series asks, “What if Lord of the Flies , but with attractive New England teens?” Created by  Christopher Keyser ( Party of Five ), The Society  centers on a group of teens who find themselves in an empty version of their wealthy New England town and must create a new society without adults or parents. But, predictably, it all descends into bloody chaos. Watch  The Society trailer below. The Society Trailer Netflix completes its transformation into The CW with  The Society , a new 10-episode series that gives a sexy teen twist onto a classic  Lord of the Flies story. Not unlike the CW’s  The 100 , it’s all about the apocalyptic consequences of young adults creating a new civilization, but as we saw in William Golding’s classic 1954 novel, that rarely ends well. As of yet, we don’t see any pig’s heads or butchering in the trailer for  The Society , but don’t be surprised if the series soon descends into that. Marc Webb...
