Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: ‘True Haunting’, Based on a 1971 Televised Exorcism, is Getting Ready to Make Heads Spin

Image
Before  The Exorcist scared audiences and broke box office records, a real-life exorcism was aired on TV. In 1971, reporter Carole Simpson interviewed the Becker family about their supposedly haunted house, and filmed an exorcism of the house carried out by a priest. Now the true story is getting the big screen treatment with  True Haunting , based on the book of the same name from Becker family member Edwin F. Becker. Deadline reports Screen Gems is developing the  True Haunting movie, with  Richard D’Ovidio  ( The Call ) set to write the script. The film, adapted from the book by Edwin F. Becker, tells ” the terrifying true story of the first televised exorcism on NBC in 1971. Millions around the country watched the program. The NBC news segment was a success, the exorcism was not. Instead, it made things worse for the Becker family who lived there. Much worse.” Spooky! Here’s a more detailed synopsis of Becker’s book: This is the story of a...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: Brie Larson’s Unreleased ‘Unicorn Store’ Coming to Netflix, Along With Another New Film

Image
Brie Larson ‘s directorial debut  Unicorn Store   premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival…and then vanished. Now the film has found a home on Netflix. Larson and  Unicorn Store producer  Lynette Howell Taylor have signed a deal with the streaming giant to bring  Unicorn Store and a new film,  Lady Business (which Larson will also direct), to subscribers. More on the  Unicorn Store release below. Deadline broke the news about the two-picture Netflix deal for Brie Larson and Lynette Howell Taylor.  Unicorn Store played to mixed reviews at TIFF, and then dropped off the face of the earth. Reviewing for /Film, Marshall Shaffer had mostly positive things to say, writing : “ Unicorn Store  might not wield the fanciest and finest filmmaking techniques to convey this morsel of knowledge, but it does show Larson possesses a wisdom beyond her years (as anyone who follows her on social media can attest). The first part...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: ‘The Red Line’ Trailer: Ava DuVernay and Greg Berlanti Team Up for a Police Shooting CBS Drama

Image
Ava DuVernay and Greg Berlanti are teaming up for a special event series following the lives of three Chicago families in the wake of a police shooting of an unarmed black man. CBS has released an extended  The Red Line trailer for this eight-episode series, which stars  Noah Wyle and more. The Red Line Trailer DuVernay brings her profound social commentary while Berlanti provides his talent for harnessing human emotion that he’s shown in his feature film  Love, Simon and in his TV series like  The Flash and  Arrow .  The Red Line follows Wyle’s Daniel Calder, whose husband is fatally shot by a white cop. While he and their adopted daughter grieve his death, the series branches out to two other families affected by this tragedy, including a woman running for city alderman and the police officer behind the shooting. The emotional and socially relevant series presents a huge departure for the network of NCIS spin-offs and procedurals. The s...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: Young David Bowie Movie Will Tell the Origin Story of Ziggy Stardust, Johnny Flynn to Star

Image
With  Bohemian Rhapsody cleaning up at the box office (and earning Oscar nominations to boot), it was only a matter of time before a David Bowie movie reared its glittery head.  Stardust is that movie, and it will star Johnny Flynn as the young Bowie making his first visit to America in 1971.  Marc Maron will also appear in the film as Bowie’s publicist, and Jena Malone will play Bowie’s wife at the time, Angie. But can anyone  really capture the essence of David Bowie (other than Tilda Swinton)? You could argue that we already have the quintessential David Bowie movie, and it’s called  Velvet Goldmine . But in this day and age when cookie-cutter biopics like  Bohemian Rhapsody break the bank, it’s inevitable that we’ll be receiving a more traditional Bowie movie. In this case, it’s a young David Bowie movie called  Stardust . Rather than covering the Thin White Duke’s entire life,  Stardust will focus on Bowie’s first trip to the ...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: ‘Run’, a New Thriller From ‘Searching’ Director Aneesh Chaganty, Hits Theaters in 2020

Image
Aneesh Chaganty , the co-writer/director of last year’s computer screen mystery  Searching , is following up that movie with a more traditionally-filmed thriller called Run . Sarah Paulson ( Glass, American Horror Story ) stars opposite newcomer Kiera Allen , and now Lionsgate has unveiled the movie’s official release date. Find out the Run release date below, and why it’s good news for the filmmaking team. Run follows a smart, cool teenager known as “Daughter” (Allen) who uses a wheelchair and is raised in complete isolation by “Mother” (Paulson), and the girl slowly learns that her mother is keeping a sinister secret. In an interview with Collider , Allen addressed the opportunity of playing a disabled character: “To see a character in a wheelchair who is, not to give too much away, but who is really kind of a hero and is her own person, and has her own mind and her own journey independent of her disability, and to see a character whose journey is really not defined ...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ Early Buzz: Robert Rodriguez Delivers a Beautiful Mess

Image
Alita: Battle Angel has been a passion project for James Cameron for nearly two decades, but since he became busy in the world of Pandora for his Avatar sequels, he decided to step back into a producer role and let Robert Rodriguez ( Sin City, Desperado ) take the directing reins. Now we’re on the brink of the film’s release, and after the first positive wave of early buzz, the first full reviews have hit the web. What do critics think about the new sci-fi action film?  /Film’s Peter Sciretta saw a screening of Alita today, and he was pleasantly surprised: #AlitaBattleAngel is much better than I anticipated. James Cameron’s fingerprints are all over it, from the fantastic world building to the on-the-nose dialogue/symbolism. Rodriguez brings some bad ass looking action. Worth seeing in 3D. It doesn’t all work, but it’s fun. — Peter Sciretta (@slashfilm) January 31, 2019 Let’s address the elephant in the room before we get into anything else: are Rosa Salazar ‘s CG-enh...
