Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: ‘The Nutcracker and the Four Realms’ Review: An Uneven but Delightfully Oddball Fairy Tale Adventure

Image
Whatever algorithm it is through which modern Disney movies are made (young women whose smarts are demonstrated by a penchant for tinkering, a missing parent, dubious authority figures, a cast peppered with recognizable stars), it’s hit a high point with The Nutcracker and the Four Realms . Though the film occasionally descends into the same CGI soup that made the recent Beauty and the Beast so baffling, it manages to keep a firmer grip on reality — which means that its flights into fancy are that much more of a delight. Directed by Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston, the film’s offerings aren’t so much to do with its plot as with visual spectacle and character turns. It’s lush and colorful in a way that’s refreshing when so much of popular media trends towards blandness or darkness — and, of course, in a way that befits its status as a holiday-themed story. At times, it becomes so colorful that it’s tempting to compare the film to anime rather than any of the other films in the Disn...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: ‘The Meg 2’ is in the Works, Waiting for Official Greenlight to Eat More Swimmers

Image
If you enjoyed  The Meg and want more big-ass shark action, you might be in luck. Word has it that  The Meg 2 is very early stages, and while Warner Bros. has yet to greenlight a sequel, talks have begun. There’s an official sequel to the  Meg novel, titled  The Trench , which should make creating a film sequel a lot easier when the time comes. But will Jason Statham return to battle a giant fish once again? The Meg was the most successful U.S.-Chinese co-production ever, hauling in $527.8M worldwide. When a genre film rakes in this much dough internationally, a sequel is usually a given. And while nothing is official yet, Deadline confirms that a sequel to the giant shark movie is in the works. The Meg executive producer Catherine Xujun Ying said: “It’s still in the very early stages, but we’re working on it. We’re trying to keep it secret at this time.” There’s no script yet, and for things to move forward, Warner Bros. needs to give the sequel a t...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: Bong Joon-Ho’s ‘Parasite’ Picked Up By NEON For North American Release

Image
Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho  burst onto the scene with 2003’s Memories of Murder , and has grown into one of the most successful international directors working right now. His most recent movie, 2017’s environmental action comedy  Okja , was bought by Netflix, where most audiences outside of film festivals streamed it. But now there’s some good news for those who love the good old fashioned theatrical experience: distribution rights to Bong’s newest film, Parasite , have been purchased by NEON, so fans will be able to see the film on the big screen.  While the South Korea-born Bong Joon-ho has made the majority of his movies in his native language, including films like Mother and his 2006 international hit  The Host , his two most recent projects, Snowpiercer and Okja , have been in English. Parasite will mark Bong’s return to Korean language filmmaking, and it will reunite him with his frequent lead actor Song Kang-ho , who has appeared in Snowpiercer , The H...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: ‘Joyland’ TV Series Based on Stephen King’s Novel Coming From Freeform

Image
There was a period following the box office success of It  where we were getting a new Stephen King adaptation announcement every day. Things have quieted down a bit, but producers still haven’t given up on the King craze. The latest King adaptation to join the ever-growing list is  Joyland , a mystery novel King released in 2013. Freeform has ordered a  Joyland TV series from writers Chris Peña ( Jane the Virgin)  and Cyrus Nowrasteh  (The Stoning of Soraya M.). While Stephen King is primarily known for his horror work, he does occasionally dabble in other genres – like mystery. In 2013, King released  Joyland , a book intended to be a throwback to the pulpy mystery novels of yesterday. According to Deadline , Freeform has ordered a TV series based on King’s book, no doubt hoping to cash-in on the Stephen King adaptation renaissance we seem to be currently going through. “We are honored to be working with Stephen King – a master storyteller who unde...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: ‘Between Worlds’ Trailer: Nicolas Cage Battles the Supernatural

Image
Fresh off his acclaimed work in  Mandy , Nicolas Cage appears to be back on his bullshit with   Between Worlds . Of course, Cage is bound to turn in a memorable performance – he always does. In the thriller, Cage plays a man trying to contact his dead wife and daughter with the help of a medium. From the look of things, it doesn’t go so well. Watch the  Between Worlds trailer below. Between Worlds Trailer  It’s doubtful  Between Worlds will generate as much great buzz as Nicolas Cage’s recent film  Mandy . For one thing, early reviews for  Between Worlds haven’t been great. For another, this trailer makes the movie look like one of Cage’s lesser efforts. But even if the film turns out to be subpar, I’m positive Cage will do great work. He never phones in a performance, and that’s what makes him one of the best. In  Between Worlds , Cage plays “a down-on-his-luck truck driver haunted by the memory of his deceased wife and child. He meets ...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: The Obamas’ First Netflix Series Will Be ‘The Fifth Risk’ Adaptation

Image
Earlier this year, we learned that former President  Barack Obama and former first lady  Michelle Obama had struck a multi-year deal with Netflix to produce multiple TV shows and films for the streaming giant. Now we may have just learned that their first project will be a Trump-inspired civics lesson. The Obamas’ first Netflix series will reportedly be an adaptation of Michael Lewis’ book The Fifth Risk , which takes a hard look at the chaotic transition from the Obama administration to the Trump administration. Collider reports that the Obamas have optioned the rights to Lewis’ recently published book  The Fifth Risk , which examines the chaos that overtook the Departments of Energy, Agriculture, and Commerce during the transition into Donald Trump’s presidency. Lewis conducted interviews with several federal workers, who described Trump appointees who arrived uninformed and under-prepared for their new duties. The “willfull ignorance” of the new admini...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: Cool Stuff: First-Ever Laurie Strode Action Figure Coming from NECA

Image
Believe it or not, there’s never been an official Laurie Strode action figure. Until now! Just in time for Halloween, the folks at NECA have revealed the first look at the first-ever Laurie Strode action figure, inspired by the new  Halloween . That’s right – soon you’ll be able to have your very own facsimile of Jamie Lee Curtis on your shelf. Behold the Laurie Strode action figure in all her glory. Based on this image, the figure is a very accurate likeness of Jamie Lee Curtis in the latest  Halloween movie, and that’s exciting. While there have been a plethora of figures based on Michael Myers, and even a few inspired by Dr. Loomis, Laurie Strode figures have remained elusive. I don’t buy action figures much anymore, but I have to admit I’m going to pick this up. It’s too cool to ignore, and the fact that it’s the first Laurie Strode figure ever more or less makes it a must-have. There’s no word on when NECA will release it, though. In the meantime, you can also look...
