Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: MoviePass Is At It Again: Former Users Being Forced to Opt Out of Automatic Sign-Up to New Unlimited Plan

Image
“Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.” It seemed like we heard the last of MoviePass trying to pull off some questionable antics when it comes to their movie ticket subscription service. But here we are with a new way for MoviePass to pull former customers back in with another change to their offerings, whether you like it or not. No, seriously, they’re trying to force users who opted out of their last subscription plan update into signing up for a new unlimited plan unless they opt out. Find out more about new MoviePass unlimited plan below. According to The Verge , MoviePass users who previously opted out of the company’s monthly plan that gives users three movie tickets each month (with limited showtime and movie offerings ) are now being enrolled in new unlimited plan as part of a “select test group.” Users whose account has been “suspended” after opting out of the previous plan “will be restored to unlimited movies (up to one new movie title per day based on e...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: ‘Deadwax’ Review: A Sinister Series with Killer Sound [Fantastic Fest]

Image
“If there is no one there to hear the falling rain in the garden, what sound does it make?”  “If there’s nothing, it could be anything.”  This is Etta’s response to a philosophical question pertaining to the manipulation and dangers experienced from sound– a concept that is deviantly explored in Shudder’s upcoming series, Deadwax . Inspired by the Satanic Panic of the ‘70s where people demonized backmasking, a technique for playing the record backwards to reveal hidden messages, Shudder provides its own spin that will make audiences want to turn the volume way up. Creator Graham Reznick is a music maven in the sound department, having worked on numerous films including In the Valley of Violence and House of the Devil . Intrigued by the manner in which auditory noises can invisibly influence an audience, he created an eight-episode series set within the world of vinyl collectors. Reznick wisely chose to capture each segment in fifteen-minute intervals allowing the storyline...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: Adam Driver Returns in ‘Saturday Night Live’ Season 44 Premiere, But Matt Damon Steals the Show as Brett Kavanaugh

Image
Saturday Night Live is back for another season, and the 44th season kicked off with Star Wars franchise star Adam Driver returning as host. Of course Adam Driver was fantastic, but Matt Damon stole the show in the cold open as Supreme Court justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh. But what about the rest of the Saturday Night Live season premiere? For the most part this was quite the average episode, but that’s not to say there weren’t some great moments thanks to the passionate performances from Adam Driver in every single character he plays. So without further adieu, let’s run through the best and worst sketches of the Adam Driver hosted Saturday Night Live . The Best Kavanaugh Hearing – Since the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary was all anyone could talk about this week thanks to the testimony of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and Supreme Court justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh, of course SNL was going to tackle the hot topic, and thankfully, they didn’t disappoint. Mat...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: Watch Rian Johnson And Edgar Wright Directed New Star-Studded Music Videos For LCD Soundsystem & Beck

Image
Rian Johnson and Edgar Wright are the latest in a long line of famous directors to cross over the musical field, adding their signature visual styles to music videos for LCD Soundsystem and Beck, respectively. But for Wright, that crossover is old news. The  Baby Driver director famously honed his distinct visual style in the early days of his career by directing music videos like Mint Royale’s “Blue Song,” which went on to inspire Wright’s 2017 heist film. Now he’s returned to the music video realm for Beck’s “Colors,” which — like LCD Soundsystem was for Johnson — is perfectly suited to his directorial style. Not only do these music videos boast esteemed directors, they also feature high-profile Hollywood stars, with  Sissy Spacek and David Straithairn  working with Johnson in LCD Soundsystem’s “oh baby,” and  Alison Brie dancing her socks off with Beck in the Wright-directed music video for “Colors.” Rian Johnson Music Video for LCD Soundsystem: “oh...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: ‘The Other Side of the Wind’ Review: Netflix Revives an Orson Welles Artifact [NYFF]

Image
The Other Side of the Wind is finally complete — or rather “complete.” Nominally. The final film by the great Orson Welles (assuming The Deep never sees the light of day) begins with a title card explaining that this version, restored by the folks at Netflix, exists as “an attempt to honor and complete” Welles’ original vision, the key word being “attempt.” With so much footage left un-shot and unedited during its original production, no version of the film today can feel truly whole. And yet, despite its haphazard meandering, The Other Side of the Wind , in the form it will now be known, is a fascinating meta-textual artifact on the very piecing together of art and intention. Despite Welles’ basing the film’s lead , director Jake Hannaford ( John Huston ), on the late Ernest Hemingway, one cannot but help peer into the past and see the aging, drunken Hannaford as an analogue for Welles himself. The film, which feels cobbled together from too many takes and angles, is framed throu...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: Sequel Bits: ‘Edge of Tomorrow 2’, ‘Mission: Impossible’, ‘Frozen 2’, ‘How To Train Your Dragon 3’, ‘Annabelle 3’

Image
In this edition of Sequel Bits: Christopher McQuarrie offers an update on  Edge of Tomorrow 2 . Christopher McQuarrie  also says a  Mission: Impossible spin-off about Isla Faust is unlikely. Kristen Bell helped shape her character’s story in   Frozen 2 . How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is now opening a week early. Mckenna Grace joins the cast of  Annabelle 3 . Macaulay Culkin  would very much like to be in a  Fantastic Beasts sequel. Edge of Tomorrow (or  Live. Die. Repeat. if you want to be a jerk about it) was a wonderful surprise – a funny, clever, exciting sci-fi flick that gave Tom Cruise one of his best roles in years, and proved Emily Blunt was a serious ass-kicker. While the flick wasn’t a smash hit, it has enough of a following that serious talk of a sequel has been knocking around for a few years. Now,  Mission: Impossible director C hristopher McQuarrie , who wrote the film has offered an upd...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: ‘The Favourite’ is a Sublime Send-Up of Royal Power Games [NYFF]

Image
A bumbling leader with little idea of the extent of duty and responsibility, surrounded by opportunistic aides looking to gain influence by obsequiously flattering the power broker and swaying the weight of an empire behind their pet cause, a coterie of enablers willing to treat geopolitical conflict like a game with winners and losers… but anyways, enough about the latest Maggie Haberman story about the White House in The New York Times , let’s talk about The Favourite ! Perhaps unintentionally given the years-long journey from script to screen, the latest filmic oddity from Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos refracts the palace intrigue so integral to today’s politics through a funhouse mirror in 18 th century England. We’ve seen countless movies recently that show how the political is personal. The Favourite takes it one step further, showing how the political is inter personal. Lanthimos revels in the perverse power dynamics across gender and social class that determine the fate ...
