Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: Michael Jackson’s Famous Appearance on ‘The Simpsons’ Confirmed to be Authentic

Image
In the early days of The Simpsons , one of the most highly publicized episodes was “Stark Raving Dad,” featuring a mental patient character named Leon Kompowsky. That’s because the character, who thought he was Michael Jackson , was supposedly voiced by the King of Pop himself. But for years, fans of The Simpsons weren’t sure if Michael Jackson really voiced the character or if it was all some kind of prank. Now we have our answer. The Simpsons creator Matt Groening recently spoke to Australian TV series The Weekly (via Mashable ), and he was asked whether it was really Michael Jackson voicing Leon Kompowsky. After all, the late pop artist was credited as John Jay Smith, and rumors have always persisted about whether or not the voice really belonged to Jackson. But Groening confirmed the casting: “We really did have him. He has the voice of someone doing a Michael Jackson bit.” Interestingly enough, though, Michael Jackson couldn’t do his own singing on the show. Groening expl...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: Another ‘City of Lies’ Lawsuit Adds More Problems to an Already Troubled Production

Image
City of Lies , the Johnny Depp movie about the murder of the Notorious B.I.G., has run into more trouble. Global Road Entertainment and Miramax are now being sued for failing to distribute the film, which was pulled from release at the start of August. Will the latest  City of Lies lawsuit finally lead to distribution, or is this one Johnny Depp film unlikely to ever see the light of day? They should retitle this film  City of Problems , am I right, folks?  City of Lies , a movie where Depp plays a real-life cop looking into the murder of the Notorious B.I.G. following the death of Tupac Shakur, has run into even more legal woes. The Wrap reports Bank Leumi, who put up $23.2 million in loans to finance  City of Lies , have filed a lawsuit against Global Road Entertainment and Miramax for failing to release the movie. This is just the latest snag in an already troubled production. A location manager on the film previously filed a lawsuit claiming...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: See How ‘Searching’ Immerses You in a Screen-Based Thriller Through a Complex Editing Process

Image
Searching isn’t the first movie to be told entirely through computer and mobile screens, but it might be the first movie to take advantage of the narrative format in such a clever and impeccable fashion. Now you can see how the movie came together in post-production and how complicated it is to bring a movie like this to life and make it feel authentic. The Making of Searching Featurette It took over a year and half for editors @willmerrick and @rick_dobson to assemble #SearchingMovie . Here’s just a TINY sneak peek at all the work it took to create just ONE single shot of the movie. **Searching is in theaters nationwide this Friday!** pic.twitter.com/PgrUcxZT71 — Searching (@SearchingMovie) August 29, 2018 The above video showcases how the graphics and animation are created to make viewers feel like they’re watching the story of Searching playing out on the screens of John Cho ‘s computer, cell phone, iPad and other mobile devices. What it comes down to is a lot of graphic...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: ‘Star Wars’ Turned Down Dave Bautista for Two Roles, the Actor Reveals

Image
Dave Bautista may be part of two major sci-fi franchises, but he sadly missed out on starring in a third. The  Guardians of the Galaxy and  Blade Runner 2049 actor impressed with his supporting turns in both series, but Bautista revealed that he aimed for the stars, and got rejected by them — twice. In an interview with Flickering Myth , Bautista said that he is a major  Star Wars fan and even auditioned twice for roles in the seminal sci-fi franchise. Unfortunately, that only resulted in him getting turned down twice: “I’ve actually auditioned for a couple of Star Wars [movies] and they’ve turned me down. It was always a dream of mine to be in a Star Wars film. I can’t say I’m the biggest fan of the latest installments. I particularly loved Rogue One. I thought it was a really great film and I love that they went a little bit dark with it. I thought it was really interesting.” Bautista didn’t reveal which films he auditioned for, but w...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: ‘The Ballad of Buster Scruggs’ Early Buzz: The Coen Brothers Western is Hilarious and Uneven

Image
The Coen Brothers are back with  The Ballad of Buster Scruggs . Originally planned as an anthology TV series, the Coens re-edited  Buster into a film, which just debuted at the Venice Film Festival. Reviews of the Western comedy are flooding in, and they hint at a movie that will wow Coen Brothers fans, and possibly perplex everyone else. See the  Ballad of Buster Scruggs early buzz below. Over at The Guardian , Peter Bradshaw has high praise for  Buster Scruggs , saying the film is a “hilarious, beautifully made, very enjoyable and rather disturbing anthology of stories from the old west,” and adding: This is a handsomely made picture, with a richly plausible musical score by Carter Burwell; it is an old-school western in many ways and if there is something comic or self-satirising about it, this doesn’t mean it is pure pastiche. There is a commitment to the genre, although the sheer eerie starkness of what is shown has an ironising effect: tiny individ...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: The ‘Cats’ Movie Will Go Head-to-Head With ‘Star Wars: Episode 9’ Next December

Image
The  Cats movie has coughed-up a release date that will put it directly up against  Star Wars: Episode 9 . There was a time when other studios would flee from a  Star Wars release date like a feline during a thunderstorm. But perhaps Universal is feeling frisky after the  Solo underperformance. Which means you can now expect Tom Hooper ‘s musical adaptation starring  Taylor Swift , James Corden , Jennifer Hudson , and Ian McKellan to give  Episode 9 a run for its money at the Christmas 2019 box office. More on the  Cats movie release date below. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s  Cats , the fourth-longest-running show in Broadway history, is finally pouncing onto the big screen. Big Broadway hits usually take a few years to make the transition from stage to screen – for instance, don’t expect a  Hamilton movie for a few years – and enough time has passed to make the  Cats movie a reality. The musical is going to meow its way into theaters...

Patrick Álvarez & Louis Leret recommends: The Best, Craziest, and Bloodiest Movies from the Scary Movies XI Festival

Image
Another week, another horror film festival in the books. It’s barely been 14 days since my Fantasia Film Festival recap highlighted the scariest and most splendid programming notes of Montreal’s three-week-long shindig, but that didn’t stop New York City’s Scary Movies XI from happening. Each August, the Film Society of Lincoln Center spooks Manhattan with a week-long curation of Halloween season holdovers as a gift to genre fans. It’s not as flashy or up-all-night as such all-encompassing events like Fantastic Fest, but it provides noteworthy screenings in an accessible after-work style for even a Brooklynite like myself. When has more horror content ever been a bad thing? As we do here at /Film, I’ve come up with various superlatives that hit upon trends and highs from Scary Movies XI. “Best Actor,” “Worst ( Best ) Breakup,” a “THANK ODEN THIS GOT DISTRIBUTION” award, etc. And there were no shortage of nominees, either. With titles like Anna and the Apocalypse , Lords of Chaos , ...
